I didn’t want to be called “special”
or “gifted.” I wanted to be taught
that being human is special, that
being alive is a gift. And now I must
avow in the mirror, over and over
“You’re not special, Akira. You’re
Oh my god!—you say—Just human?!
Please, let your “specialness” be
replaced by the blessedness of Being.
I don’t want my “self” lifted—only
my humanity. Now, I’m left to get
over my “self,” so I can cherish
being human once again.
